FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
QUESTION:

ANSWER:
This depends on the cause of your wet basement. Contact us and we'll talk through the symptoms your basement has and help guide you.

QUESTION:
I want to finish out my basement. Should I have a basement waterproofing system installed first?
ANSWER:
Especially, if your basement has any of the symptoms listed above, we firmly recommend that you call us to inquire about what your basement may need before finishing it out. But please know that, even if your basement is already finished out, there are options to take care of your wet basement. What they are will depend on the cause.
Internal drain tiles
Wet basements are frustrating, limiting and may be impacting your family's health. Most wet basement issues are best solved with an internal drain tile. However, the most effective solution couples an internal drain tile and a radon mitigation system. More about that later.
When the soil around your home becomes saturated with water it can seep into your basement through cracks or even right through the concrete. Gravity pulls the water down and not only do you have a wet basement, but you may have staining and even some flooding.

Internal drain tiles run along the inside perimeter of your basement, collecting water and pumping it away from your home.

THE PROCESS
-
First we’ll install a sump pump.
-
Then, we’ll create a 1 foot wide trench along the perimeter of your basement and 4” deep trench along side your footing.
-
Next, the drain tile will be placed in the trench surround by gravel. Gravel allows the water to move into the pipe with ease.
-
When the drain tile/ pipe is placed both ends will be connected into the sump barrel
-
The sump pump will actively pump the water away from your home.
-
Over the top of the gravel is an L shaped poly mat and on top of that, we’ll pour concrete to come level with the existing concrete floor.
How an internal drain tile works:
Yes, this does mean we'll be breaking into your concrete! But don't worry, by the time we're done we'll have your basement broom swept clean!
When someone says drain tile, you may picture something like the tile on your bathroom wall or kitchen back splash. But a drain tile looks nothing like that. Its' actually a corrugated pipe with small holes in it. The holes allow water to flow in. And the pipe directs the water to your sump pump.

FUN FACT:
Drain tiles get their name form back when they were a series of red clay tile tubes, placed along the exterior of homes. If you've ever been digging and come across a piece of red tile, it may have been someone's old drain tile.
WHY AN INTERNAL DRAIN TILE AND RADON MITIGATION SYSTEM IS YOUR best OPTION
First of all, a radon mitigation system will reduce your exposure to radon gas, the leading cause of lung cancer among non smokers.
Also, radon mitigations provide constant circulation under your homes slab. This helps dry out the soil under your home. The more dry your soil is, the more dry your basement is. That means- less odor, less mold, less mildew and less concrete degrading crystalline deposits.
Remember,
at Z Radon and Basement Waterproofing we guarantee our water proofing systems will not increase your radon levels
external drain tiles
External drain tiles function similar to internal drain tiles, except that they run the exterior perimeter of your home. It involves extensive excavation, such as trenches 3 feet wide and 8+ feet deep along the exterior of your home.

While we can and do install external drain tile systems, they are applicable to very specific situations and often are not your most economical option due to the amount of excavation that needs to take place.

wall stabilization and basement cracks
Bowing basement walls and cracks in your basement walls can be concerning. Not only may you be concerned about the integrity of your foundation, but these symptoms often lead to wet basements
The installation of an internal drain tile will help alleviate the pressure behind your walls. However, we also mend cracks by epoxy resin injection and if needed stabilize the wall to reduce the likely hood of future cracks and bowing with steel posts.

Sumps pumps
and
back up sumps
Some times the solution is easy and not quite so unfamiliar. Z Radon Basement and Waterproofing installs sump pumps and back sump pumps.
Plus, we're certified to seal your sump pump to meet radon mitigation specifications. This means you don't have to call and pay a radon specialist, just to seal your sump. In addition to that, our lids are custom fashioned to allow you access to your sump float without having to break your radon seal.
